Wisdom tooth removal in Koothattukulam
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come through, usually between the late teens and mid-twenties. Many people have no trouble with them, but when there is not enough room they can get stuck, partly come through and cause pain or infection.
When a wisdom tooth needs to come out
- Repeated pain, swelling or infection of the gum around the tooth
- Decay in the wisdom tooth, or in the tooth in front of it
- A tooth that is stuck (impacted) and pushing on its neighbour
- Cysts or damage to nearby teeth and bone seen on an X-ray
A wisdom tooth that is not causing problems is often left alone and checked regularly.
What to expect
- Your dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see its position and roots.
- The area is numbed with local anaesthesia.
- The tooth is removed, sometimes in pieces if it is impacted.
- You are given instructions and medicines to manage pain and swelling.
Recovery
- Swelling and soreness usually peak in the first two to three days and then settle
- Use a cold compress on the cheek on the first day, as advised
- Eat soft, cool food and avoid very hot drinks for the first day
- Do not spit forcefully, use a straw, or smoke, since these can disturb the blood clot and cause a painful dry socket
- Keep the rest of your mouth clean, and rinse gently as your dentist advises
Other mouth and jaw surgery
Besides wisdom teeth, we assess other problems that may need minor surgery in the mouth and jaw. Examples are broken roots left in the gum, extra or buried teeth, and cysts seen on an X-ray.
Dr. Alka will explain what she finds and what is needed. If a problem needs hospital care, we will tell you plainly and help you take the next step. For ordinary extractions, see our tooth extraction page.
When to call us
Contact the clinic if the bleeding does not stop with firm pressure, if you have a fever, or if the pain gets worse after the third day instead of better. If you have swelling that makes it hard to swallow or breathe, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Questions about wisdom tooth removal
Does removing a wisdom tooth hurt?
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure but not pain during the removal. Afterwards there is some soreness for a few days.
How long does recovery take?
Most people feel better within a week, though full healing of the gum takes longer. It depends on how difficult the removal was.
Can I go to work the next day?
Many people can, but if the tooth was impacted, you may want to rest for a day or two. Your dentist will advise you.
Do all wisdom teeth have to be removed?
No. Only those that cause problems or are likely to. Your dentist will check with an examination and X-ray.
This page gives general information. Your own treatment depends on an examination by your dentist. Individual results vary.
