Tooth extraction in Koothattukulam

We always try to save a natural tooth. Sometimes, though, a tooth is too damaged, loose or infected to keep, and removing it is the best way to protect your health. We explain each step first, and we look after you carefully afterwards.

When a tooth needs to be removed

  • Decay or a break that goes too deep to repair
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • A tooth that is infected and cannot be saved with a root canal
  • A tooth that is blocking others from coming through
  • Crowding, when teeth need to be removed before orthodontic treatment

For wisdom teeth, see our wisdom tooth removal page.

What happens

  1. Your dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray.
  2. The area is numbed with local anaesthesia. You should feel pressure, but not pain.
  3. The tooth is gently loosened and removed.
  4. You get clear instructions and medicines for the first few days.

Looking after the area

  • Bite on the gauze as advised to stop the bleeding
  • Eat soft, cool food for the first day
  • Do not spit forcefully, use a straw or smoke, since this can disturb the clot and cause a painful dry socket
  • Keep the rest of your mouth clean, and rinse gently as advised
  • Call us if the bleeding does not stop, or the pain gets worse after the third day

Replacing the tooth

A gap can make the teeth next to it drift, and can make chewing harder. We can talk about options for replacing the tooth, such as a dental implant, a bridge or a denture. See our implants and crowns, bridges and dentures pages.

Questions about tooth extraction

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Afterwards there is some soreness, which usually settles in a few days.

How long does it take to heal?

The gum starts to close over in a week or two, and the bone takes longer to fill in. Most people feel back to normal in a few days.

Do I have to replace the tooth?

Not always, but a gap can cause the teeth around it to move. Your dentist will advise you on whether it is worth replacing.

Can I go to work after an extraction?

Many people can, but you may want to rest for the rest of the day. Your dentist will advise you.

What should I do if bleeding does not stop?

Bite firmly on clean gauze for 20 to 30 minutes. If it still does not stop, call us, or go to the nearest hospital if the bleeding is heavy.

This page gives general information. Your own treatment depends on an examination by your dentist. Individual results vary.
