Types of braces
Braces come in several types, including metal braces and tooth-coloured (ceramic) braces. They move teeth in the same way, but they differ in how noticeable they are, how they feel and what they cost. Ask us at your consultation which options suit you and are available, and we will explain the difference.
What happens
- Smile consultation and iTero scan, with a preview of your likely result.
- Your treatment plan, with the options and the estimated time explained.
- Treatment starts. With braces, regular visits for adjustment. With Invisalign, you change to the next set of aligners as advised.
- Check-ups to follow your progress.
- Retainers. They keep your teeth in their new position, and you will need to wear them as advised.
Looking after your teeth during treatment
- Brush after meals and clean carefully around brackets or aligners
- Avoid very hard or sticky food if you have braces
- Keep your regular cleaning appointments
- Wear your elastics or aligners as advised, since that is what keeps treatment on track

What is the best age for braces?
Children can be checked from around the time their adult teeth start to come through, and adults can have treatment at any age if their teeth and gums are healthy. Dr. Alka will advise you.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
It depends on how far your teeth need to move. Your dentist will give you an estimate after your scan.
Do braces hurt?
Teeth can feel sore for a few days after the braces are fitted or adjusted. This usually settles.
Which is better, braces or Invisalign?
Neither is better for everyone. Your dentist will recommend the one that suits your teeth and your lifestyle.
Do I need to wear a retainer afterwards?
Yes. Teeth can slowly move back without a retainer.
